Protecting caravan pipes in winter with Safetrace

For this feature, we’re introducing Safetrace and its range of trace heating products. They are designed to help protect suitable pipework from freezing when correctly selected, installed and used with insulation.

What is trace heating?

Trace heating uses an electric heating cable fitted to the outside of a pipe. The cable supplies heat to help replace what the pipe loses to its surroundings, while insulation helps retain that heat.

Think of it as a way of supporting the pipe’s frost protection during cold weather. It heats the pipework it is fitted to; it is not a heater for the caravan or a way of protecting every part of its water system.

How Safetrace works

Safetrace’s self-regulating cable changes its heat output in response to temperature along its length. Colder sections produce more heat, while warmer sections produce less.

Its ready-made frost protection kits also have an in-line thermostat, which switches the heating on and off as required, and a fitted 13A plug. The thermostat and self-regulating cable perform different jobs: one controls when the heating operates, while the other adjusts the cable’s heat output.

The September 2026 campaign information lists heated lengths of 2, 4, 6, 10, 15 and 20 metres, together with a two-metre power lead. Safetrace also offers technical support to help customers select a suitable product. Check the current range and availability before ordering.

Which pipes can it protect

Safetrace describes its self-regulating products as suitable for plastic and metal pipework, including exposed water pipes serving caravans. Suitability depends on the pipe material, size, layout, insulation and the conditions the system needs to cope with.

Plastic pipework needs particular attention to heat transfer. Safetrace’s guidance specifies aluminium foil tape over the heating cable where required by the design. Ask which accessories and insulation your installation needs rather than assuming the kit alone is everything required.

What to check before buying

Start with the length and route of the pipework you want to protect. Include bends, valves and other fittings when discussing the installation with Safetrace. A photo or simple sketch can help explain your layout.

Check that you have a suitable electricity supply and that it will remain available when protection is needed.

The system cannot provide heat during a power cut or when the supply is switched off. Safetrace’s instructions specify RCD protection; ask a qualified electrician if you are unsure about the supply or installation.

Suitable insulation and weather protection are essential too. Follow the instructions for the exact product you buy and seek help if access beneath the caravan or the installation is difficult. Running costs will depend on the cable length, conditions, insulation and electricity tariff, so ask Safetrace for an estimate relevant to your setup.

Does it replace draining down

No. Trace heating should be considered alongside your normal winter preparation, not as a replacement for it. Follow your caravan manufacturer’s advice, park requirements and the conditions in your insurance policy, including any requirements to turn off the water and drain down.

Fitting trace heating does not change your policy conditions or mean that every part of the water system is protected. If you are unsure what your insurer requires, check with them before relying on a different winter routine.
